My Top 10 Proposals!

Puerto Ricans Rights Blog!
In this  blog Roxanne wrote about the offensive things that people say about others. I agree that nobody should say bad things about other people but i dont agree on sending them to jail for a week. These people should be orientated.

Ivania's proposal is a very good one. I agree with the criminals having visits more often and for them to be with their families. They are still living people.

Itze's proposal is a very good and realistic one. I agree with her on everything because everyones should have the right to select their gender and the way they want to be.

African Americans already have the rights proposed in Genderies Blog but backs then they didnt. Those ideas should have been expressed back then when they were being discriminated.

I have never thought of the proposal that Jenny submitted. It is true that we drive and follow government rules and that some of us work. We should have the right to vote too.

Juans blog is very reasonable because everybody should have equal rights. Immigrants should have the right to work wherever they want and to not be discriminated.

Veterans should have equal rights too. They should receive good benefits for the work they are doing for American and they should receive a healthcare plan.

Women are like men and they should have the same rights. Women should be able to accuse a man if they verbally judge them or they abuse of them.

A worker should have the right to choose their job no matter their race, sex or religion.

Some people with disabilities can still have the right to to do what  normal people do. They should be able to vote, work, and have an education. This is something we can change!

Freedom Of Religion!

In the United States, there are many types of religions being practiced. Everyone has the right to choose their religion and to respect the religion of others. Although Catholics were not respected back then, they are now. Freedom of religion should be one of the important issues that occur in the United States.

Since the United States has many different religions they should be able to pick the one they most appreciate or like. I believe that no one should discriminate their choice of religion and they should respect it no matter what. Freedom of Religion is the First Amendment of the United States Constitution and back then it wasn't well respected but today it is. Religion should be free and everybody should be able to practice their religion without being mistreated. There should be no law regarding religion.

Freedom of Religion is the First Amendment in the Constitution of The United States. No law should be established regarding religion.Citizens should be able to pick their own religion and practice the want they want to. Nobody should discriminate religion!

Catholicism Today!

Catholics struggled a lot in the past decades to gain equal rights. They were discriminated and mistreated by Protestants, the Ku Klux Klan, and other organizations. They made up a small percent of the United States religion. Now they make up a large percent and Catholicism is one of of the most practiced religion in some states.

Roman Catholicism is a branch of the Christian religion. They have unique traditions and practices and their own beliefs aside from those of Christians. Catholicism has become one of the largest Christian groups with around a billion followers. In nearly all Latin countries, Spain and Italy, Catholicism is the most practiced religion and it makes up half of the worlds Christians. Statistics show that in 2001, 24% of Americans identified themselves as Catholics. Around five Supreme Court Justices are Catholics. Catholic citizens have gain respect from the community and from different people around the world. They are no  longer discriminated and are free to walk down the streets without facing any kind of danger. Catholics have their private churches, priests and many loyal followers.

Although Catholics struggled a lot now they have the equal rights they deserve. They make a large percent on the United States population and have their own churches, unique beliefs and priests. Catholicism is one of the most practiced religion in countries like Spain, Italy and Latin American countries. Now Catholics are well knowned around the world and held high positions in government and in other positions. The Catholics have succeeded.

Catholics Struggle for Equal Rights

Catholics were opressed and mistreated by many groups or organizations in the United States for many years. They were rejected by society and violent crimes were committed against them. They struggled a lot but did not give up. Instead they started thinking of new ways so that the United States citizens would accept them and treat them equally.

Catholics found a new way to be treated like they deserved, to assimilate. They decided to assimilate into the American society but they still kept practicing their religion. One of the things they did was to participate in both World Wars. By becoming part of the American army they were showing their loyalty to the nation and they hoped that the citizens would see that. Catholics then started gaining the reputation of being socially responsible and for being leaders in the community. Catholic priests and people became involved in social labor and started caring for the poor. They opened shelters and homes for poor and helped them with basic needs like food or clothing. By doing most of these things, people started changing the way they saw Catholics. Others accepted them because they said it was better to have some religion than not having any type of religion. Catholics started seeing progress when president John F. Kennedy was elected president. JFK was Catholic and although he had a hard time winning the elections he still won. Being Catholic almost cost his election but he succeeded.

The fought for equal rights was a very tough one but they did not give up and they eventually succeeded. Assimilation was their choice so they wouldnt be rejected by American society. They fought in world wars, started showing their care for the poor, opened shelters and a catholic won the United States presidency. Catholicism is one of the religions that is most practiced in the Unites States and that wasnt easy gained. They had to work and gain their respect but they did it and now they are wide known and a very popular religion around the world.

Catholics Being Opressed

The Catholic religion is a very common one in the United States and around the world but back then it was not. The United States religion around the 1700 was the Protestant religion. Catholics were discriminated by many different organizations and people. Citizens who wanted to practice the catholic religion was very hard for them because they were not accepted or rejected by society.

United States Citizens used to practice the Protestant Religion for many years. People who came from other countries like Ireland and wanted to practice the Catholic religion was almost impossible for them. These people were opressed by the Ku Klux Klan and other Christian denominations. These would vandalize and burn their houses, cars, and other property. These groups also committed violent crimes like the killing of catholics. Citizens believed that by practicing the catholic religion they were damaging or destroying the culture of the United States. Many incidents happened with catholics who wanted to held high positions in companies and even in the government. In 1928, Al Smith wanted to run for president but guess what? HE LOST! Smith was catholic and since the majority of US citizens were anti-catholics, he didnt have enough votes.

Many Catholics citizens in the United States had a hard time when it was time to practice their religion. These were rejected or discriminated by many organizations like the Ku Klux Klan that only accepted the pure white and by the Protestants. Catholics property was burned and destroyed and other Catholics were even killed. As you could see this religion issue affected many people and even politicians. Good thing that the religion issues in the United States have improved.

Catholic Civil Rights

Catholics and other religious groups have been fighting for a long period of time over their rights. Many places around the world have tried to prohibit some basic rights to their people and some have succeeded. Some governments or groups of people have also joined these ideas and have done the same thing. As the ideas spread, people were uniting more and more to fight against these. Many groups, committees, or associations have formed to fight for their rights. One group is the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights.

The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights defends the rights of Catholics so they can appear in public appearances without discrimination or them being treated unjustly. They wanted to certify the religious freedom and freedom of speech for Catholics among other things. The organization was founded in 1973 by Virgil C. Blum and was president until 1989. Many people around the world started joining the organization. The last estimate of membership was made in 1999 with 350,000 members. In the counties of Nassau and Suffolk in New York around 15,000 members were claimed in 2003. They make around 0.1% of the US population.

The Catholic League has done many protest over the years. Besides protest, they share ideas and respond to other peoples comments. The last response was made in March 31 against a Macy's commercial who offended the Catholics. We hope to keep hearing more about this group and their movements.

Commenting on Others Blog!

Edricks Blog:
Edricks essay had many important info. that not many of use knew about. His conclusion was very good because he was right about what he stated. It was well written and everything was organized! I bet he put a lo tof effort into it. :)

http://edrickimmigrationfacts.blogspot.com/

Genderies Blog:
  - Genderies blog had many interesting facts all through out her essay. Her statements were written the correct way and her topic was well developed. She makes us realize what these Indians went through and all the things they had to change to become like the white. This is something no one wants to do, be like others!

http://gingersimmigration.blogspot.com/

Nestors Blog:
- The first thing that caught my attention was his interesting title. It was very unique and catchy. It was a long essay but it was excelently written. He used many proper words that made it more profesional. I liked his conclusion because he made it different although he stated his opinion. He is right about the government still owning them money and who knows if theyll ever pay up.

http://nestor40.blogspot.com/

Tiffanys Blog:
- Her introduction was amazing beacuse it quickly caught my attention adn she stated all her facts. She really put feelings into her essay but she still told what happened without being too bias. I like her opinion on the conclusion. It is true that both acted the wrong way and that the war could have been prevented. Good Job :)

Hiomarks Blog:
- I like many of his comments on the subject. He says that the white think that the Indians were "savages and hostil". That is very true because one of the main reasons for the Indians to assimilate was beacuse whites though they were not capable of doing anything. He  also says that "alcohol was the destroyer of the indians life" and that was one reason. Very interesting!

Native Americans Assimilate!

Many Americans believed that the best way for the Native Americans to settle in white land was to assimilate their ways. Native Americans would assimilate into American Society as landowners and citizens. For this to happen, reservations must have been divided into allotments. Here families learned to be self-supporting. For the Indians to assimilate they had to change thier names, cut off their hairs and change the way they dressed, They also had to change their religion and language. Many Native Americans refused but at the ned they learned to assimilate.

The Daws Act was passed by Congress in 1887. Reservations were divided by families ; 160 acres were given to the households for farming,  80 acres for the single adult, and 40 for the children. The remaining land was given to the American settlers which was more than the land given to the Native Americans. This plan did not work because many Indians did not know how to plant or they had little training.

For a Native American to settle in, they had to change their name to an American white name. One Indian changed his name to Charles Eastmen becuase his dad wanted him to settle in American land. Native Americans hated changing their names becaus they felt their whole history and heritage was being changed.

Americans felt that Indians should cut their hairs and dress more like Americans would. Men and children had to cut their long beautiful braids and put them short. They also had to leave behind their traditional clothing and start wearing formal pants, shirts, shoes and women had to wear dresses.

Americans felt that the most important way of assmilation was for the Indians to change their language and especially their religion. Native Americans had to chang their baisc language to English. Children would go to boarding and special schools to learn their english. Religion was a very important issue for both, the Native Americans and the white settlers.

White settlers felt that the best way for Native Americans to settle in white lands was to assimilate their ways. Indians had to change their names and culture. In 1924, Congress passed the Citizenship Act that granted citixenship to all Native Americans that had stayed in their allotments for 25 years. Ten years later, the Daws Act was ended under the presidency of Franklin Roosevelt. Reservations and the control of them was granted back to Native Americans. Indians passsed thorough many harsh situations but at the end they gained some of their property back.

Other Blogs :)

Paola's Blog:

It was incredible to hear Paola's immigration story. She really researched her topic and got good information and i bet she did not know it. It was nice to learn about how she got her last names from Brazil and Spain. Not so many people are fortunate of having those desendants.
http://mylifeaspaola.blogspot.com/

Roxanne's Blog:

In Roxannes blog i saw her video and her response to it. Immigration is a very controversial theme. Roxanne says that she wants immigrants to come to America without passing through a lot of trouble. That i do not agree with. I think that if immigrants want to come to the US they have to do it the legal way and if they are coming to America they should work and own their place.

Carolina's Blog:

I really liked Caro's immigration story. Immigration is something that affected many people throughout the countries. She wrote about the Irish, which i found very interesting. It was sad to see how how many Irish had to leave their country because they had no food or they didnt have any money. Most of them risked their families or lives. They were nor sure if they would have jobs or proper housing but they still tried it. This teaches us to be grateful for what we have because other people live in poorer conditions.

Karlitza's Blog:

Karlitza wrote about Japanese immigrants. I learned that most Japanese migrated to Hawaii. There they did not earn much money and worked on agriculture. Americans were scared that Japanese would take away their jobs so they made laws restricting them. Life as an immigrant was not easy at all but maybe it was better for them becuase at the end or through hard work they got better living conditions which was what they looked for.

My Immigration Heritage

I havent migrated anywhere but my grandparents have. My grandparents are native from Puerto Rico and in March 1961 they moved to Conneticut and then they moved back to Puerto Rico. My grandma had 28 years and my grandpa was 26 years. They were economically stable, they had jobs and good living conditions.

Grandma was a registered nurse and my grandpa was a histopathology technician. It all started when my grandpa was offered a job in a hospital in the city of Conneticut. They got to America without any problem since they were American citizens. They quickly settled up in the house and my grandpa headed to New Heaven Hospital. There he instantly got promoted to Sitology technician or as a supervisor. My grandma found a job in another hospital in Conneticut but her job status got lowered. She went from a registered nurse to a licensed nurse but  she got paid more than she got in Puerto Rico. She loved her job and she started taking extra credits or courses so she could have her original job status back. At the hospital, she served as an interpret for hispanic people who entered the hospital. She also says that people were very kind to her and she faced no problem. Once in a hospital she had a friend that had never been in Puerto Rico. After her vacation, she couldnt believe that Puerto Rico had televisions, electric stoves and proper housing. This gives us an idea of what people think of Puerto Rico.

All this changed when my grandfather went on a medical convention to Brazil. There he found an old friend of his that offered  him a job back in Puerto Rico. He quickly accepted the job offer and all the family moved back to Puerto Rico. My grandma liked it overthere but she agreed to move because her family was in PR. They got to Puerto Rico and went to live in the city of Ponce. Both of them went directly to their jobs and everyghting went back to normal. They dont regret living in the US for a while becuase they had a good experience and learned alot from the American culture.

Immigration Today!

This video is called illegal immigration and education. In this video, Barack Obama directs the nation about his plan of illegal immigration. Obama tells us that he doesnt understand how the US provides the education for the young students and then deports them back to their homeland. He still wants to protect his borders from illegal immigrants but he doesnt mind the immigrants that are already in the United States if they contribute to the economy. Through the entire video he talks about the immigrants that study and work, those are the immigrants that he wants in America.

This video made me realize some things. I thought that illegal imigration was not bad but now i understand. People have to realize that if it is illegal, it is illegal and you have to respect the laws. If more people keep coming in and not working, then they are not contributing to the economy and they are not needed but if you come to America to study and work then you are contributing to the economy and you will be needed. I think that people that are already in America should not be deported but they should stay and work and the new ones that come in should be in a controlled amount and they have to contribute. If the amount of immigrants that come in are controlled and they work, i dont think that people should mind their presence.

Aideen's Diary

March 15 1845

Things here in Ireland are going from bad to worst. It hasnt rained in alot of time and we are barely getting any food. The food that we get we give to my younger sister becuase she is the one that suffers the most. My little sister is called Aine and she always asking where is father and why is she the only one eating. Although we explain it to her she doesnt get it, shes just a kid. Today my dad brought us the last potatoes. Daddy told us that the potatoes are growing rotten and with bacteria and that those would be the last potatoes we ever ate. At night, I heard mom and dad talking and i wondered what was it about. I stayed there a while and managed to understand the situation, we were gonna starve to death becuase no crops were growing. I was terrfied but i knew i had to help my family and keep my mouth shut.

March 16 1845

Today i left house for a walk and i heard many people talking about the potato famine. I saw a friend of mine and went to talk to her. Caitlin asked me if i knew anything about the potato disaster going on. I told her that i had received the news and she told me that she was leaving to the new world. The new world? I asked. Whats that? I felt so confused. Caitlin told me that the new world was in America and that the living conditions were way better in there and there was no hunger going on. She kept talking about it and it sounded like paradise.....I definitely wanted to go there. When i arrived home i talked to mother about it and she told me that we had no money to leave to the New World. All my hopes failed.

October 2 1845

Well a lot of time has passed since i last wrote on this diary but a lot has changed. The crops are barely growing but i managed a plan. My family and i have been raising money to leave to America. Not many people around have been able to leave Ireland but some have. My dad has sacrificed alot so we can have enough money to leave. Theres only one problem and that is that daddy has raised enough money for three. That will cover up my moms ticket, my sisters ticket, and probably mines. Daddy would have to leave later on and i dont know what well do without him. Im gonna miss him so much and im scared that he wont be able to come with us. Well we are going to start packing so we can enter the New World. By the way we leave in a week.

November 1, 1845

Dad stayed back home and we have been in this boat for almost three weeks. It is very crowded in here and there are families and children. The food aint that good but at least we get to eat something. Aine keeps crying because she is bored and has no toys, sometimes i play with her and she feels better. This allows mom to rest for a while becuase she looks very tired. I cant wait to get off this ship and see America. I really dont know how things will be but expect them to be marvelous and the trip to soon be over. I miss dad alot and i hope to see him soon. Everything will be back to normal when we are together.

November 28, 1845

We have arrived at Elis Island. Supposedly we have to stay here for a few days until they accept us in America. The officers at the door separated us into categories. Women are in one side of the building, men on the other and children in the other area. Mom got separated and Aine and me are together. I have been taking care of her and im so tired. Know i understand mother. The living conditions in here are horrible, we have little space, and almost no food. I cant wait to get out of here. I will play with Aine and write later.

December 12, 1845

Today an officer called us for the interview and questions were asked to us for about 3 hours. They asked me questions that i didnt know. Im just a child. They asked me where was i going, where was i going to live, how much money did i have and where was i going to work? I felt useless because i could not answer any of those questions. The good news is that mom passed the interview and we are going to America!!!
Im so excited!

December 14, 1845

We arrived at a big city called New York. Mom took us to a one room apartment where we managed to settle down with a few stuff we brought from Ireland. The place is so small but at least mom and Aine are happy. Mom misses dad alot and so do we. I cant wait to see him. We are going to start settling down now!

January 6, 1846

We have settled down and everything is working perfect. Mom aint earning much money but is way better than what we used to. I know go to school where im learning my english and Aine goes to a child care for Irish babies. Its amazing. It is hard to make friends though but i know i will manage it. Today is going to be the best day of my life because daddy is coming!
We have prepared everything so he would be happy. Mom has been saving money to prepare him a delicious meal and we will have a family night.

Dad arrived! Mom and i cried alot when we saw him and Aine was jumping up and down. He told us about his trip and we told him about what was going on in here. He told us that he was going to look for work tomorrow and that more money would be in the family. Mom felt so relieved. I feel like im complete again. The family is united and our better life starts here!

The Irish Immigrate!

In the 19th century many Irish decided to migrate into the New World. Irelands main industry was agriculture and lands were rented to small famers that worked very hard for their crops to grow. They did not have many tools to plant and they did not know any new techniques. For a crop to grow it could take months or years.

Around 6,000 Irish people sailed to America in 1816 and two years later it doubled to 12,000 Irish people. The Irish Famine was one of the baisc reasons for the Irish to migrate. Sinca Irelands industry was based on agriculture they rest upon the growth of potatoes. In 1845, about three-fourths of the countrys potatoes were ruined. The people had nothing to eat and they started dying of starvation or diseases. The Irelands Census stated that nearly a million poeple had died due to this catastrophe. After this disaster about one qaurter of the Irish population had migrated to the America.

In New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Illinois, Ohio and New Jersey, the Irish started to settle. They lived in cellars, one room apartment or basements. They started getting sick and started abusing of alcohol. Most of the people who went to jail in the US, were Irish. Although many Irish men were unskilled they still were able to have jobs by building roads, canals, or working in mines in the United States. Some were able to save enough money and buy land and to transport themselves into the farming areas.

The Irish were part of the Catholic religion and they were constantly attacked by Americans but they still took control of the American Cathoilc Church. Irish supported the Democratic Party becuase they were afraid that if the salves were freed they would come to the North and take away their jobs.

The Irish became to be an important part of the Americans. They became successfull with a good education, jobs and owned property. They started moving out of the farming areas and into the towns and suburbs. Irish started marying out of their culture, they married other Catholics and then Americans. The Irish made a good decision by migrating into the United States. They got better job oportunities and better life conditions. After all they were proud to be Irish Americans!
